Toshiba e-STUDIO 388CP
38ppm A4 Colour Printer · Print Only
The Toshiba e-STUDIO 388CP is a print-only A4 colour printer rated at up to 38ppm. Camelott® offers rental, servicing and repair with UK-wide support, helping teams keep existing equipment working when scanning is already covered.
Earlier printer: compare the newer Toshiba e-STUDIO 409CP for a new equipment proposal. See the practical differences. The 388CP does not scan, copy or fax.

The Toshiba e-STUDIO 388CP is a 38ppm A4 colour printer, rather than a multifunction photocopier. Its low desktop body, automatic duplex printing and touchscreen can remain useful for invoices, correspondence and colour reports where scanning happens elsewhere. Camelott® handles rental, servicing and repair enquiries across the UK, subject to suitable equipment, condition, parts and coverage. For a new purchase or lease, compare the newer 409CP. Any older-model purchase or lease is subject to actual stock and agreed terms.

A Dedicated A4 Printer When Scanning Is Already Covered
The useful distinction is the job this machine does: printing, without a scanner above it. If your reception or small team already uses a shared scanner, keeping a suitable 388CP working can provide local colour output without adding another multifunction device.
The 38ppm engine offers more sustained output than some compact 33ppm alternatives, but that does not make it a high-volume production printer. Its 250-sheet main drawer and 125-sheet output tray still need attention during longer runs. Paper loading and collection can matter more than a small speed difference.
For an existing machine, inspect condition and repair scope. For rental, agree the installed options and service arrangement. For growing print demand, secure workflows or current software needs, compare a newer configuration rather than judging by the model number alone.
A newer A4 printer to compare
388CP and 409CP: What Changes in Practice?
| Feature | 388CP | Newer 409CP | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Functions | Print only | Print only | Replacement does not add scanning or copying. |
| A4 engine | 38ppm | 40ppm | About 8 seconds less theoretical engine time per 100 pages; not a full-job guarantee. |
| Main drawer | 250 sheets | 250 sheets | No increase in the base main drawer. |
| Maximum input | 1,451 sheets with options | 2,001 sheets with options | Different accessory combinations; confirm the supplied equipment. |
| Output tray | 125 sheets | 170 sheets | More room for finished pages under stated conditions. |
| Automatic duplex | 60–105gsm; A4/custom | 60–105gsm; A4/custom | No increase in automatic-duplex stock weight. |
| Storage | Optional HDD | Optional 128GB ISD | Neither is a promise of a standard 256GB secure SSD. |
| Security platform | Check actual options and setup | TPM and configurable security features | Dedicated key protection is relevant alongside authentication, firmware and data disposal. |
Replace wear when it is the cause of disruption
A new unit starts with unworn feed and transport components. That can help compared with an ageing, heavily used printer, but paper, loading and maintenance still affect jams and reliability.
Assess the complete configuration
Flash storage removes a mechanical disk’s moving parts and can improve storage access. Security depends on encryption, key management, access controls and erasure. Check the optional 128GB ISD on the newer model rather than assuming a particular secure SSD is included.
Check today’s systems and the years ahead
A current platform may have a longer remaining support horizon and newer security features. No fixed driver-support period is promised. Confirm your operating systems, firmware, network and print applications.
Keep the decision proportionate
Compare the repair scope and actual interruptions with the complete new-equipment cost. The newer model adds only 2ppm to rated A4 speed; a sound repair can still be sensible.
See the Toshiba e-STUDIO 409CP. This is a newer current-range alternative, not a claim of a manufacturer-announced replacement date. Both are print-only A4 devices.

1. Print engine
38ppm Colour Output Without a Scanner Assembly
The 388CP is a dedicated A4 printer. It does not provide walk-up copying, document scanning or fax.
Why this is useful
A local printer can keep correspondence, invoices and colour reports close to the people who use them. A theoretical 100-page engine run takes about 2 minutes 38 seconds.
What to weigh up
Processing, the first page, media and duplex settings affect total job time. The 15-second figure is recovery from sleep, not a cold-start measurement. If you need scanning or copying, choose a multifunction system.
2. Controls and stored jobs
A 4.3-Inch Colour Touchscreen for Local Control
The colour panel gives access to printer settings and status without adding multifunction scanning hardware.
Why this is useful
Staff can check job status and settings at the device. Private-print functions can help with confidential output when configured correctly. Test them with your actual driver and workflow.
What to weigh up
The optional HDD is not standard equipment. Toshiba lists operator-panel lock and disk wipe with an HDD requirement. Check installed options, supported files and security settings; do not assume the 388CP has the newer model’s TPM platform.
3. Network and connections
Share the Printer Over a Wired Office Network
Gigabit Ethernet and USB 2.0 are listed on the 388CP. Wireless LAN is an option, not standard equipment.
Why this is useful
A wired shared queue can make the printer available to several staff without buying a scanner for each desk. Mobile printing can help where the network and device setup support it.
What to weigh up
This marker identifies the connection side of the printer; the rear sockets are not visible in this front view. Confirm fitted wireless hardware, network permissions, firmware and current drivers. Old brochure references to retired cloud services are not current capabilities.
4. Manual feed and media
One Special Sheet Without Emptying the Main Drawer
The base manual slot accepts one sheet. A 100-sheet multipurpose supply is part of the optional Duo-drawer.
Why this is useful
An occasional supported envelope or special sheet can use the separate feed path while ordinary paper stays in the drawer. This can suit short, varied office jobs.
What to weigh up
Confirm your exact envelope, coating, weight and settings. The 176gsm feed limit is not the automatic-duplex limit. A 100-sheet bypass must not be described as standard.
5. Paper supply and duplex
250 Sheets as Standard, with Expansion When Needed
The base main drawer holds 250 sheets. Extra drawers can keep another supported stock ready or reduce reloading.
Why this is useful
Separate supplies for ordinary paper and letterhead can reduce interruptions. A lighter-use team may not need the maximum feeding configuration.
What to weigh up
A full 500-sheet ream will not fit in the standard drawer. The maximum needs compatible accessories and includes the manual slot. Duplexing, specialist stock and optional drawers have separate restrictions.
6. Output and finishing
125-Sheet Output for Loose-Page Collection
Finished pages collect in the upper output area. No inline stapling, booklet-making or hole-punching option is listed for this model.
Why this is useful
For short jobs and occasional reports, collecting pages and assembling them by hand may be proportionate. Local output can also reduce trips to a larger shared machine.
What to weigh up
Long runs may require staff to empty the tray before the input supply is exhausted. A booklet layout in the driver does not physically fold or staple sheets. Repeated finished packs need a suitable alternative platform.
Printer terminology, explained by Bean
Confused by Printer Jargon?
Bean explains the terms without the technical waffle, including which copier features this print-only machine does not have.

- PPM — Pages Per Minute
- The rated engine speed under stated conditions. The 388CP prints up to 38 A4 pages per minute in colour or mono. Processing, the first page, paper and duplex settings affect the finished job.
- IPM — Images Per Minute
- Often used for scanned sides: one double-sided original is two images. The 388CP has no scanner, so a scanner-IPM headline does not apply to this printer.
- GSM — Grams Per Square Metre
- Paper weight per square metre. Approved 388CP feed stock reaches 176gsm, but automatic duplex supports 60–105gsm. Size, coating and the selected path also matter.
- MFP — Multifunction Printer
- Combines printing with functions such as copying and scanning. The 388CP is print-only. If staff need to capture paper originals, specify a separate scanner or an appropriate MFP.
- ADF — Automatic Document Feeder
- Feeds a stack of originals into a scanner. There is no ADF on the 388CP. Its paper drawer feeds blank print stock, not documents for scanning.
- DSDF — Dual Scan Document Feeder
- Captures both sides of an original in one pass. The 388CP has no scanning feeder. For regular double-sided records, discuss a suitable multifunction machine or separate scanner.
- RADF — Reversing Automatic Document Feeder
- Scans one side and reverses the original to scan the other. The 388CP has no RADF. Automatic double-sided printing is a different function.
- DADF — Duplexing Automatic Document Feeder
- An original feeder that can handle both sides. Check single-pass versus reversing designs when choosing scanning equipment; neither is fitted to this print-only model.
- Duplex — Automatic Double-sided Printing
- Prints on both sides without manual reloading. The 388CP supports approved 60–105gsm A4/custom stock for automatic duplex. Heavier feed stock is not automatically suitable.
- DPI — Dots Per Inch
- A resolution measure. The 388CP lists up to 1200 × 1200dpi print resolution. Compare real documents and supported settings; a resolution headline alone does not establish better output for every job.
- CPC — Cost Per Copy
- A service-agreement term for the charge per printed or copied page. Here it concerns printing. Ask about mono and colour rates, duplex counting, minimum billing and included service or consumables.
- FCOT / FPOT — First Copy / Print Out Time
- FCOT concerns copying and does not apply to the 388CP. First print is approximately 7 seconds under manufacturer test conditions; network processing and waking from sleep can add time.
- A4 / A3 — Paper Sizes
- A4 is 210 × 297mm; A3 is 297 × 420mm. The 388CP is an A4 platform. For larger sheets or folded A4 booklets, choose suitable A3 equipment.
- Booklet Maker — Folded, Stapled Booklets
- A compatible finisher folds sheets and staples along the fold. The 388CP has no listed inline booklet maker. A booklet print layout does not physically assemble the pages.
- Hole Punch — Pages Ready for Binders
- A compatible finishing attachment punches the printed sheets. There is no listed automatic inline punch for the 388CP. Plan manual punching or choose a platform that accepts the required attachment.
- Corner Staple — Keep Each Set Together
- A staple near the corner holds a report together. No automatic inline stapling option is listed for the 388CP. Repeated assembled packs may justify compatible finishing equipment.
Specifications in real life
What the 388CP Figures Mean in Your Office
Useful when: Short reports and everyday correspondence need local colour output.
What to check: About 2 minutes 38 seconds of theoretical engine time for 100 pages; total elapsed time is longer.
Useful when: Your team already scans elsewhere and needs another print point.
What to check: An MFP is more suitable if users need local copying or capture of paper originals.
Useful when: Lighter use makes the base supply sufficient.
What to check: A full ream will not fit; extra drawers cost money and add height.
Useful when: Jobs are short and collected regularly.
What to check: Longer runs may need collection before the input drawer is empty.
Useful when: Supported ordinary office documents are printed double-sided.
What to check: The 176gsm feed limit does not apply to the whole automatic-duplex path.
Useful when: Users benefit from local status and setting controls.
What to check: Check private print, installed storage and current driver compatibility on the actual unit.
Think about the working day
Where Keeping or Renting a 388CP Can Make Sense
Put output where people use it
A compact print-only unit can suit a reception, small office or nearby team when shared scanning is already available. Confirm desk strength, ventilation and service access.
Repair a suitable machine for a specific reason
A clear fault, service history and meter reading make a repair assessment more useful. Replacing every older machine is not automatically the best use of the budget.
Check the full job rather than five PPM
Against a 33ppm engine, 38ppm saves about 24 seconds over 100 theoretical engine pages. This is a defined comparison, not a promise for short jobs or every competing printer.
A familiar drawer size with an output limit
A 250-sheet main drawer is common in compact A4 printers. The smaller 125-sheet output tray needs attention on long runs; a high optional input total does not remove that limit.
Keep letterhead ready when it is used often
Optional feeding can separate ordinary paper from another supported stock. If special sheets are rare, the base manual slot may be enough.
Ask about the packs people assemble
Occasional hand-stapled reports may suit this printer. Regular corner-stapled sets, folded booklets and punched binder packs favour a platform with compatible attachments.
Inspect the installed setup
Check private print, users, firmware, current drivers and fitted storage. Optional HDD functions and wireless must not be assumed from a general brochure.
Agree what is supplied and maintained
Confirm equipment condition, accessories, delivery, collection, rental period, service coverage and total cost. A maximum duty figure is not a recommended monthly workload.
Match the functions to the work
The 388CP Can Still Fit When...
It makes sense if you...
- Mainly print A4 and smaller supported documents
- Already have suitable scanning and copying elsewhere
- Need local colour and mono output at up to 38ppm
- Can work with a 250-sheet drawer or specify extra feeding
- Use approved 60–105gsm stock for automatic duplex
- Can collect pages and assemble occasional packs by hand
- Can confirm condition, current compatibility and available support
We would compare alternatives if you...
- Need built-in scanning, copying or fax
- Need A3 output or larger originals copied
- Need automatic stapling, booklet making or hole punching
- Need heavier stock automatically duplexed above 105gsm
- Need a full-ream main drawer as standard
- Have long unattended runs that exceed practical output collection
- Cannot confirm suitable software, security or service arrangements

Make the proposal specific
Before Renting or Keeping a Toshiba 388CP
Do users need print only?
Confirm whether local scanning, copying or fax is required now or later. A printer cannot add an ADF through a paper-drawer option.
What is the actual condition?
Check meter reading, service history, recurring faults and the specific repair scope.
Which paper paths are involved?
Record the tray, stock size and weight, and whether the fault occurs on the first side or during automatic duplex.
Are extra supplies worthwhile?
Specify drawers for actual loading or stock changes. Maximum paper capacity is not the base configuration.
Are sensitive print jobs controlled?
Test private print and review authentication, fitted storage, firmware and secure disposal.
Does today’s software work?
Confirm the exact OS, current driver, applications, network settings and mobile-print requirements.
What is included in the arrangement?
Agree equipment condition, delivery, collection, service coverage, exclusions, CPC where applicable and total cost.
Would a newer model solve the real problem?
Compare features, practical capacity and security setup. A small PPM increase alone may not justify replacing a useful printer.

Ask about suitable available stock. We confirm equipment condition, location, period, accessories, service inclusions and rental terms.
Do you provide UK-wide service and repair?
Camelott® handles UK-wide enquiries. Supply your postcode, meter reading, error codes and symptoms so we can confirm coverage, parts position and charges.
Which newer printer should I compare?
The Toshiba e-STUDIO 409CP is a newer current-range A4 colour printer. Compare its configuration and security features; no manufacturer replacement date is assumed here.
How much faster is the newer 409CP?
Rated A4 output rises from 38ppm to 40ppm. That is about 8 seconds less theoretical engine time over 100 pages. Real jobs include processing, first-page response, media and duplex effects.
Does the 388CP have a document feeder?
No. It has no scanner or original-document feeder. Optional print-paper drawers do not add scanning or copying.
Does it print double-sided automatically?
Yes, on approved A4/custom paper from 60–105gsm. The higher 176gsm feed limit is separate.
Is wireless standard?
No. Toshiba lists the wireless LAN module as optional on the 388CP. Confirm the actual installed equipment and network setup.
How much paper is standard?
The main drawer holds 250 sheets and the base manual feed takes one sheet. Maximum input of 1,451 sheets requires compatible optional equipment.
Is the 100-sheet bypass included?
No. A 100-sheet multipurpose supply is part of the optional 650-sheet Duo-drawer, alongside its 550-sheet cassette.
Can it automatically staple or make booklets?
No inline stapler, booklet maker or automatic hole punch is listed for this model. Use manual assembly for occasional packs or compare a compatible finishing platform.
