There is no single “best photocopier brand” for every organisation. The better question is which manufacturer, model and support arrangement best fits your print volume, scanning, security, paper handling, energy priorities and expected ownership period.

The comments below are based on Camelott's field experience, customer feedback and the machines we have installed, serviced and replaced. They are not laboratory tests and should not be treated as universal statements about every model in a manufacturer's range.

Toshiba e-STUDIO

Our Strongest All-Round Office Platform

  • Scanning is a major strength. We have several solicitor customers who have specifically commented on the quality and usability of Toshiba scanning.
  • Very broad model and configuration choice. A4, A3, mono, colour, higher-speed devices, paper options and finishing are available across a wide range.
  • Good fit for complex office workflows. Where scanning, finishing, user authentication and mixed departmental use all matter, Toshiba is often our first benchmark.
  • Not perfect. Every platform has limitations, but in our experience Toshiba currently offers the strongest overall balance of range, scanning, workflow and serviceability.

Epson WorkForce

Excellent Energy Efficiency, but More Application-Dependent

  • Very energy efficient. Epson's heat-free business inkjet approach can materially reduce printer energy use.
  • Print quality is more paper-dependent in our experience. Ink behaviour is affected more by paper quality, surface and thickness than toner output tends to be.
  • Higher-quality output can reduce speed. If the application requires better-quality paper and higher-quality print settings, some of the headline productivity advantage can reduce.
  • Routine maintenance can be simple for the user. This can reduce engineer attendance for everyday maintenance items.
  • Major failures can be expensive. Print-head replacement can be a very significant repair cost and, on some equipment, can approach the economic value of the machine.
  • Cleaning and engineering flushes consume ink. We have seen machines use very substantial quantities of ink during recovery or head-cleaning procedures.
  • Low colour use needs consideration. On colour inkjet devices, long periods of little colour use can increase the risk of heads drying or requiring additional cleaning.
  • Paper dust has been more noticeable to us on some Epson installations. In our experience that contamination can contribute to wear or failures elsewhere in the paper path.
  • Finishing and configuration choice is narrower than Toshiba in the ranges we have worked with. We are particularly cautious about recommending finishing on some of the older large Epson platforms.

Konica Minolta

Very Strong Colour Quality & High-End Production Capability

  • Colour quality is a notable strength. When output is examined closely, Konica Minolta can produce very strong colour results.
  • Strong higher-volume range. Their larger machines are particularly relevant where very high monthly print volumes and robust A3 colour output are required.
  • Best judged at model level. As with Toshiba, the exact configuration, service support and workflow matter more than the logo alone.

Katun Arivia

Newer Brand, Promising Reliability

  • Still a newer proposition. Katun Arivia does not yet have the same long field history as Toshiba or Konica Minolta.
  • Early reliability looks promising. The machines we have worked with appear mechanically strong and commercially interesting.
  • Range breadth is currently more limited. There are fewer A4 options and less overall variety than Toshiba's much broader portfolio.
  • Worth comparing where the specification fits. A newer badge should not rule it out if the machine, support and commercial terms are right.

One claim we are deliberately not using in this comparison is any broader criticism of Epson's corporate or environmental standards. We have heard comments in the market, but we have not independently checked that evidence. The energy-efficiency point above is therefore kept separate from any unverified company-level claim.

A real-model example using published yields and current UK consumable prices

20% Coverage vs 40% Coverage: Why Inkjet Can Become More Expensive Faster

To make this easier to understand, compare two similar high-speed A3 colour machines: the Epson WorkForce Enterprise AM-C6000 and the Toshiba e-STUDIO 6525AC. The figures below use published cartridge yields and UK retail consumable prices checked in September 2026.

Coverage-variable cost Ink and toner change with how much of the page you cover.

A page with large photographs, coloured backgrounds or solid fills consumes more ink or toner than a lightly printed office page. On inkjet, the ink can represent a very large proportion of the whole colour-page cost, so increasing coverage can move the total CPC sharply.

Mostly page/cycle-based cost Drums, fusers and many other laser service costs do not double just because coverage doubles.

These components are generally costed over an expected number of pages or machine cycles. Their cost per page is therefore much less directly linked to image coverage than toner. Actual component life can still vary with media, duty cycle, environment and machine condition, so they are better described as largely coverage-insensitive rather than absolutely fixed.

Now put both machines on the same 3p colour CPC

Why the same 3p headline price does not carry the same coverage risk

This next step is deliberately illustrative. Assume both managed-print agreements are priced at 3.00p per colour page at roughly 20% total coverage. When coverage doubles, only the coverage-sensitive ink or toner element is doubled in the example. Drum, fuser, transfer, service and other page/cycle-based costs are held constant because they do not normally double merely because twice as much of the page is covered.

The reason is simple. In this researched example the Epson's coverage-sensitive ink cost is about 1.75p of the page before other service costs, while the Toshiba's coverage-sensitive toner cost is about 0.84p. When coverage doubles, the Epson therefore has roughly twice as much additional consumable cost exposed per page.

Research basis. Epson publishes 50,000-page black and 30,000-page cyan, magenta and yellow yields for the AM-C6000. Toshiba publishes 39,800 black and 38,000 CMY toner yields at 5% coverage for the e-STUDIO 6525AC. Xerox's technical documentation explains that a colour yield test using roughly 5% of each CMYK channel represents about 20% total coverage, and that doubling coverage approximately halves toner yield. Current UK retail genuine-consumable prices were checked from Toner24 in September 2026 and converted to ex-VAT values for the calculations above.

Important: 40% figures are proportional estimates, not manufacturer-rated yields. Real consumption can differ because of image composition, colour balance, print mode, cleaning/calibration, media, environmental conditions and device behaviour. Epson itself states that actual yield varies depending on images printed and usage conditions.

What about Canon, Xerox, Ricoh, Sharp or HP?

A Good Brand Can Still Be the Wrong Machine

The UK market includes many established manufacturers beyond the ranges Camelott currently supplies. Their existence does not make the comparison above incomplete; it means brand alone is not a useful buying rule.

Canon, Xerox, Ricoh, Sharp, HP and other manufacturers all have business equipment in the market. We would not recommend dismissing an existing machine simply because Camelott does not supply that badge. If your current device is reliable, economical and still fits the workflow, keeping it can be a better decision than changing brand.

The purpose of a brand comparison is to narrow the shortlist. The final decision should be made at model level and include the dealer's service capability, not just the manufacturer's reputation.

A practical selection process

How to Choose Between Photocopier Brands

  1. Measure the workload. Monthly mono and colour output, peaks, job sizes, A3/A4 use, paper capacity and number of users.
  2. Define the scan workflow. Scan-to-email, folders, Microsoft 365, Google, document management, OCR, secure destinations and any high-volume scanning requirement.
  3. Identify security requirements. User authentication, secure release, department tracking, address-book control and data handling can affect the shortlist.
  4. Compare total cost. Equipment price or rental, service CPC, minimum billing, energy, consumables and expected life should be considered together.
  5. Compare support. Who will service it, who understands the drivers and scanning, how quickly parts are available and what happens if the problem is software rather than hardware?
  6. Then choose the model. Once the requirement is clear, compare individual models rather than buying whichever badge was recommended first.
