Current Legal Status

Martyn’s Law — formally the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025 — became law on 3 April 2025. It requires organisations to assess terror risks and have proportionate plans in place.

Note: While the Act is law, duties are not yet in force. A 24-month implementation period is confirmed before legal obligations begin in 2027.

Is Martyn’s Law already in force?

The Act became law on 3 April 2025. A 24-month period is in place before legal duties are enforced in 2027.

Will schools and churches be affected?

Yes. If publicly accessible and meeting capacity criteria, they must meet Standard or Enhanced duty requirements.

Do I need physical barriers?

Under Standard Duty, physical alterations aren't mandated unless your specific risk assessment deems them necessary.
